Magic of Herbs: Sunflower Power

If you've ever received a social media message from me, chances are you're familiar with how much I enjoy the sunflower emoji. It's my favorite flower, and it's filled with the kind of energy I am dedicated to evoking in my healing work.

Look straight into the face of a fully bloomed Sunflower and try not to smile. Go ahead, I dare you. I double dare you. Are you smiling yet? Admit it, you cracked a small grin at least.

The sunflowers I used for my Yemaya and Oshun (to whom sunflowers are beloved) altar really hung in there, and brought a smile to my face for days every time I'd wake up to the sight. It absolutely helped for those days where depression was just that much easier to fall prey to.

If you're looking to figure out how else sunflowers can work with you, just think of the sun- and the sun's incredible energy. Sunflowers are pure sun magic.

This has been long acknowledged, particularly with the sunflower's tendency towards heliotropism- essentially tracking the sun (though science is slowly breeding this inherent magic out of the plants). They are absolutely tied to the sun, in fact most sunflowers that don't receive enough sun tend to weaknesses and droop down rather pathetically.

Due to their loyalty to the sun, sunflowers were often given to loved ones as a sign of loyalty and adoration. For the same reason, sunflower seeds and flowers can be used to bind the will and are often harnessed in loyalty spells and hexes. Sunflowers are nature's reminder that behind most smiles, there are teeth. Just because they are full of sun magic doesn't mean they can't have a dark side. Much like the sun is a cleanser and chases away the darkness, sunflowers have been used to mirror this effect in truth charms.

Add to a bath and let your skin soak up the energy of happiness they give so freely. Use them in ritual space to bring about the joy of the sun and increased warmth. Cast a ring of sunflower petals or better yet sunflower stalks to call up a magical circle of healing warmth. Meditate on the joy and happiness you seek. Soon after, stick them in a large vase of water in pride of place to keep the magic with you and in your space.

In fact, if you ever want to cheer up a space, just add sunflowers. This sunlight-filled renewing and reinvigorating energy made them a perfect main ingredient for my meditative tarot tea blend, Sunlit. They were also the inspiration for the tarot spread showcased in my newsletter, positioned right at the heart of a spread illuminating ourselves to love.

They are a joy to work with.  I encourage you to try this natural magic for yourself. Go big with a full on happiness ritual or start a little smaller with a single sunflower in a tall vase on top of your dresser. Don't be surprised if you find yourself smiling to yourself a little more.
